Being My Own Work Of Art

Sometimes I forget to care about how I look. I put a band in my hair and tie it out of the way and then get on with it. Not sure when I stopped caring or why I did either. Probably a collection of reasons. Short of time, short of energy. I also suffer from depression at times and anxiety, that could have something to do with it.

I used to care a lot about how I looked. I spent years getting up early so I could ensure that my make-up was perfect, paint my nails, do something awesome with my hair. I want to care again. My life is work, children, bills, household chores. I remember what it felt like to know that I looked amazing. I worked as a model for a while ... a long time ago. I work online now, so no one sees me. There seems to be no point in bothering.

Sometimes though, when I need to dash to the store or answer the doorbell, I wish I had made an effort. Not really so that I can impress anyone else but so I can be confident and not feel like I'm horrible. I've heard it said that it's not what's on the outside that counts. That's true enough in my opinion. The thing is though, that the way you take care of your appearance often reflects the way that you feel about yourself. This may not be true for everyone, but it's certainly true for me.

When I look better I feel better. I'm not short of make-up, nail polish or beauty products. It's just the desire to make the effort that has fallen away. I'm a creative person and for a long time I found a lot of personal satisfaction in deciding how to present myself each day. I love colors, shapes and ideas. It's for this reason that I have decided to care again (attempt to). For the inspiration and the satisfaction that comes with creating, being my own work of art.

There are two main things that reminded me that I care how I look. Zumba and bows. The Zumba class I attend has these cool party classes where you get to dress up to suit the theme it's so much fun! Bows ... Bow Down For Bows is mu daughters creation. She makes and sells these amazing bow hair clips. Lately she has been busy with a new job so I have been helping to manage the facebook page and to make the bows. I suddenly remembered that I like wearing pretty things!

Bed Head Chrome Crimper />So my revival begins with bows and hair! I'm a die hard 80s fan so if there's one thing I love it's crimped hair so cool! Yep, you guessed it I went out and bought a crimper just a few days ago. Can hardly wait to play with it! Of course I haven't had time yet but I promise that I will!!!

Inspired now to do some cool stuff with it so I hit google to see what cool ideas I could find for crimping hair. I found lots! Here are my favourites so far. This is going to be fun yay. I'm sure the people at the corner store will be suitably impressed haha!

I found the colorful blonde style (below right) at haircutsblog.com. Love the colored hairspray. I have blue and pink colored hairspray left over from the 80s themed Zumbathon so this one is going to happen! I have tried hair chalk as well but I didn't like it. I found that it is really
drying on the hair. Since my hair is pretty dry already it just ended up a giant, frizzy colorful mess! Won't knock it though, it works really well for other hair types.

In the 80s we just crimped our hair ad made it as big as possible. If you didn't have a crimper then your could braid your hair in a trillion little braids and leave it over night. It creates a similar effect, a lot of effort though! I remember doing it several times!

^ This one I found at visualmakeover.com. Love the softness and the classic style. Works really well mixed with the crimped texture. A really pretty look that is not too 'wild 80s flashbackish'

<<< This one is from visualmakeover.com as well. Very cute, the heart shaped sunglasses are adorable. I probably wouldn't wear them though, all sunglasses look bad on me! Another soft look that frames the face very well and avoids being over-powering.

So I promise I will use my new crimper and crimp my hair before the end of this week! Not sure which of these I will go for, probably a combination of all three.
